Several
years back, (about the time I quit doing steps for all the right
reasons), I went into this quaint little bistro accompanied by a few
friends and, thanks to the six inch step at the door, some unwanted
(and terribly unnecessary) hoopla.
The sudden
commotion of two waiters dropping everything, with an “OH!” and
one of those exaggerated ‘Stoogesque’ starts forward from a dead
stop to “reasonably accommodate” me; to offer what my friend
Norman Kunc refers to as an “unexpected attack of help”, drew
the attention of everyone in the place. All they lacked was a
friendly “Nyuk, Nyuk, Nyuk” or possibly a
“Woob-boob-boob-boob” or two to make it at least entertaining
for me.
It had been a
long day of conference sessions and all I wanted was a beer or two,
a sandwich and some heady conversation. Nothing more. Nothing less.
I called the
manager over and, after describing the last few minutes from my
perspective, mentioned that he might want to get rid of the six inch
step at the front door (being the law and all).
“Why?” he
asked, “We don’t get any wheelchairs in here?!” Incredulous! I
about walked! (Now, I imagine, he works for the DOJ or maybe the
SSI’s PASS office).
Sometimes all I
want is a beautiful winding road, the Allman Brother’s
‘Jessica’ in the deck and no traffic in front or behind. I’d
drive all night.
“No
worries…” as my Aussie friend, Kate, says, “She’ll be
right.”
